On 16th September 1851 a group of shipping and commercial men held a meeting at the office of the Mercantile Marine Board. They resolved to found a sailors' home in Bristol "an institution for raising the character and promoting the comfort of seamen", (Latimer, The Annals of Bristol in the Nineteenth Century). Property was obtained in March 1852 and the home itself opened in January 1853. |
