Administrative / biographical background: |
Clifton High School for Girls was founded in 1877 by a group of Bristol and Clifton citizens, notably Lt.Col. A.C.Pears and Dr. John Percival. The school was administered by a Council, the first President being the Very Revd. Gilbert Elliott, Dean of Bristol. The school was opened on 24 January 1878. The first premises were at 65 Pembroke Road, which rapidly proved to be too small, and after one year the school moved to its present premises in College Road. The first Headmistress was Miss Mary Alice Woods, ex-headmistress of Chelsea High School, who held the post until 1891. A new hall was opened in 1889, and in 1896 the boarding facilities were increased and integrated into the school. A new wing designed by Sir George Oatley was opened in 1927, as part of the school's Jubilee Celebrations. The College Road site has been extended and altered in many ways since then, amounting to a total of 13 acres. Apart from the very youngest age, the school has never been co-educational, but maintains close and friendly links with Clifton College |
