Administrative / biographical background:

J.R. Phillips, the oldest surviving wine merchants in Bristol, was founded by William George in 1739, who set up business at 59 Baldwin Street. In 1781 Philip George, one of William's sons, left to start a brewery, leaving his brother James with the wine and spirit side of the business. James Phillips became a partner with James George in 1808, and in 1810 the firm moved to Nelson Street, their premises for 150 years.

The firm is now a wholesale agency owned by Allied Lyons and Whitbreads, operating from Avonmouth.
