Administrative / biographical background: |
The company was established in Broadmead, Bristol in 1788 and began trading as a glazing and glass bending firm. During the course of the 19th century the Company diversified and is listed in city directories as glass stainers, looking glass manufacturers, patent plate, sheet and ornamental window glass merchants, wholesale glass sellers, bent and stained glass manufacturers and glass, oil, white lead and colour merchants In the early 1920s the firm turned to paint manufacturing and the well-known Brolac label appeared in 1922. In 1928 the company's Hengrove factory was founded. Following the acquisition by Jenson and Nicholson in 1948 the factory continued to specialise in the production of paints for the decorative market under the Brolac label. In 1983 Berger Decorative Paints began trading. The company's Bristol operations finally ceased in 1988. |
