Administrative / biographical background: |
Sarah, Lady Haberfield, who died on 5 December 1874, had made provision that after her death, subject to the payment of certain bequests to individuals and charities, her estate should be realized and her appointed trustees should use the proceeds for the erection and endowment of almshouses for people in need from the ancient parishes of St.Mary Redcliffe and Clifton. The almshouses were to be erected in memory of her late husband, Sir John Kerle Haberfield, who had been six times Mayor of Bristol. The almshouses were built by Messrs Wm. Cowlin & Son to the design of Messrs. Pope & Paul and the first residents were chosen in April, 1891. The trustees were also able to provide outpensions for those needing some financial help but not accommodation and, through Queen Anne's Bounty, regular contributions to six of the poorer benefices in Bristol. |
