Administrative / biographical background: |
The firm was formed from two earlier businesses in 1919. Both firms had premises at Poole's Wharf, 139 Hotwell Road before the merger and this remained the main depot. They were principally coal merchants but later became sand and gravel merchants as well. In 1963 the firm was taken over by the Bristol Sand and Gravel Company (later to become British Dredging (Bristol) Limited), which amalgamated in 1964 with F.Bowles and Sons, a private company in Cardiff, and subsequently became a public company. Trading in coal ceased in 1966. |
