Administrative / biographical background:

The Stokes Croft School was founded in 1722 by Abraham Hooke, merchant, with other members of the Lewins Mead Independent congregation. The school was managed by feoffees, with the treasurer and governor being elected from among them.

For admissions, boys whose parents attended Lewins Mead were given preference.

The School/Almshouse was destroyed during an air-raid in November 1940, and some of the records in this collection were damaged at that time.
