Administrative / biographical background:

James Cowles Prichard (1786-1848) became Physician to the Bristol Infirmary 1816-1843 and was responsible for much pioneering work in medical studies in Bristol. His books 'Physical History of Man' (1813), 'Treatise on Insanity'(1835) and 'Natural History of Man' (1843) became standard works. He was a linguist of considerable ability.

 

His second son Augustin Prichard (1818-1898) became Lecturer on Anatomy at the Bristol Medical School in 1843 and Surgeon at the Infirmary 1850-1870. He specialised in eye diseases and operations. He was a watercolour artist of some distinction.
