Records of the Bright family relating to proposals for improving the harbour of Bristol, and obtaining several Acts of Parliament for the purpose.

 

The urgent need of improvement of the harbour at Bristol was felt in the 18th century. In 1765, J.Smeaton put forward a plan. Two years later, William Champion produced a scheme for damming up the Avon. This was followed by a dock project, designed by John Champion. It was not until 1802 that the matter was considered seriously. In 1802 William Jessop put forward a plan In 1803, an Act for improving and rendering more commodious the Port and Harbour of Bristol was passed. Under its provisions a company was formed called the Bristol Docks Company. In 1806 a further Act was passed extending the powers and provisions of the previous Act. In 1808 and 1809 further Acts were passed enabling the company to borrow money to complete the improvements of the Port and Harbour of Bristol.
