Scaled 1:10,000 the map is of an area where (1999) a considerable amount of battlefield archaeology - successful battlefield archaeology - is being undertaken. Armentieres is on the extreme left of the map and the front lines run almost exactly down the centre of it. Frelinghien is in the German area; Houplines is behind the British front. As with some of these other 1:10,000 maps produced in the G H Smith catalogue there is great detail of the British trench system running from the Frelinghien to Houplines road and going down to L’Epinette. People interested in the famous Christmas truce of 1914 will be familiar with many of the places depicted on this superb map. The German trench system shown is incredibly complex.
