Administrative history:
The Diocese of Southwark was formed in 1905 and lies in the Church of England Province of Canterbury. The Diocese has jurisdiction over 317 square miles of London south of the River Thames, formerly in the ancient counties of Kent and Surrey, areas which had been in the Diocese of Rochester and vast Diocese of Winchester. In 2003 the Diocese was serving a population of 2,358,000 in 302 parishes. It includes:
Parishes in the ancient county of Surrey, forming the Parliamentary Divisions of east and mid Surrey, which had been transferred from the Archdeaconry of Surrey in the Diocese of Winchester, to the Diocese of Rochester in 1878;
Parishes in the ancient county of Kent which had been transferred to the Diocese of London in 1846 and returned back to the Diocese of Rochester in 1867, namely Charlton, Lee, Lewisham, Greenwich, Woolwich, Eltham, Plumstead and Deptford;
Parishes in the former Deanery of Croydon which were peculiars of the Archbishop of Canterbury, namely Barnes, Bunstow, Charlwood, Cheam, East Horsley, Merstham, Mortlake, Newington, Putney and Wimbledon. The peculiars were parishes or places which were formerly exempt from the jurisdiction of the bishop in whose diocese they were physically located, and were answerable directly to the Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1846, Newington, Barnes, Putney, Mortlake and Wimbledon had ceased to be peculiars and became part of the Diocese of London, and in the same year the remaining peculiars of Addington and Croydon were transferred permanently to the Diocese of Canterbury.
In 1927, the Diocese of Guildford was formed from parishes in the ancient county of Surrey remaining in the Archdeaconry of Surrey in the Diocese of Winchester and a few Hampshire parishes.
In the late nineteenth century, the cathedral church at Winchester could not respond to the needs of the rapidly increasing populations in South London experiencing poor living and working conditions. Although the area had been transferred to the Diocese of Rochester in 1878, Anthony Thorold, Bishop of Rochester was determined that the religious life of South London would have its own firm identity. As a result, a Suffragan Bishop of Southwark was appointed in 1891 and the ancient parish church of Saint Saviours, Southwark was restored to become the pro-Cathedral in 1897. In 1904 an Act of Parliament created the new Diocese of Southwark and in 1905 the church became Southwark Cathedral (also known as the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of Saint Saviour and Saint Mary Overie).
Edward Stuart Talbot, the 100th Bishop of Rochester, was enthroned as the first Bishop of Southwark. The bishop was faced with the challenge of building up the Church over the South London with a population of nearly two million inhabitants and great social disparities from the prosperous villages of Reigate or Kew and Edwardian suburbs to appallingly overcrowded tenements of inner London.
In 2003 the mission of the Diocese was:
to 'pray for the renewing power and love of the Holy Spirit in our worship, work and witness';
to 'seek the rule of God in our lives, our church, our communities, the life of the earth and the whole of creation';
to 'Share the Faith - proclaiming the Good News, teaching and nurturing new believers, making disciples and equipping them for service';
to 'Search for Truth - open to God's Word, exploring God's activity in different contexts and cultures';
to 'Serve our Neighbour - responding to human need by loving service and by confronting the unjust structures of society; and
Follow Jesus - in his suffering love for the salvation of all people.
In 2003, the Diocese of Southwark was divided into three Episcopal Areas each with a Suffragan Bishop and two Archdeacons:
Croydon Episcopal Area:
Bishop of Croydon
Archdeacon of Croydon
Archdeacon of Reigate
Kingston Episcopal Area:
Bishop of Kingston
Archdeacon of Lambeth
Archdeacon of Wandsworth
Woolwich Episcopal Area:
Bishop of Woolwich
Archdeacon of Lewisham
Archdeacon of Southwark
The Diocese of Southwark was twinned with three Anglican Dioceses in Zimbabwe (2003).

The records of Southwark Diocesan Registry include the following: grants of faculties relating to church buildings and fittings with a large number of coloured drawings and plans of churches, monuments, stained glass designs and other fittings (1905 - 2000); consecration and dedication papers including petitions and plans relating to new churches and burial grounds (1905 - 1976); ordinations and appointments of clergy (1878 - 1974); records relating to marriages including lists of marriage licences granted to couples intending to marry in churches within the Diocese of Rochester and Southwark (1877 - 1910, 1940 - 1958) and marriage warrants and affidavits recording the declarations made by parties intending to marry by licence (1905 - 1974). The collection includes records relating to visitations, the process by which the bishop maintained faith and discipline, and corrected clerical and lay abuses, including lists of churchwardens (1924 - 1956), visitation returns (1907 - 1956) and presentment reports submitted by churchwardens on the state of church buildings and the conduct of clergy and parishioners in the parish (1905 - 1974).

Contents:
The records provide basic details relating to clergy including:
Subscription books for curates (unbeneficed clerks serving a cure of souls), incumbents and ordinations of new clerks (1905 - 1963) (formerly referenced DS/OB/S) which record the date, the name of the benefice (endowed church offices which provide a living), declaration and name of the subscriber.
Subscriptions were required by Act of Parliament 1571 to the 39 articles of religion, before entry on a cure of souls. From 1604 Canon 36 (reinforced by the Act of Uniformity 13 & 14 Charles II) required subscription by clerks to three articles: a) Recognition of royal supremacy in the church b) Use of Book of Common Prayer c) Adhesion to the 39 articles of religion. From 1866 new canons modified and simplified the terms of subscription;
Induction book (1878 - 1924) and induction papers (1939) recording the placement of clerks to vacated benefices. They record the names of the clerk, the previous incumbent and benefice;
Mandates for induction (1956, 1960 - 1963) recording the names of the clerk, the previous incumbent and benefice. These papers are orders which were given by the bishop to the archdeacon to induct the clerks legally presented by patrons, accepted by the bishop, and instituted into possession of vacant benefices;
Ordinations (1905, 1910, 1912 - 1913, 1916 - 1974) recording admissions to Holy Orders, including the date and place of ordination, the name of the bishop or acting commissioner conferring the orders, and the names of those ordained arranged in groups according to the orders conferred;
Licences (1943 - 1974) granted for the appointment of parish clerks under Canon of 1603. These documents usually include a copy of grant entry, the certificate of appointment by the incumbent of the parish, and also subscription to oaths on taking office. Curates licences were required under Canon 48) and include the name of benefice, licence date, curate's name and stipend (the salary or payment);
Presentation papers (1906 - 1907, 1912 - 1913, 1915 - 1916) record patrons' formal presentation or introduction of clerks to vacant benefices in their gift. They provide the names of the parish, the new and former incumbent, how the last incumbency was vacated (by either resignation, cession or death), and name of the patron. Some also include a bond entered for performance of the presentation
Commissions to surrogates (1961 - 1962), the diocesan officers who stood in office for another, often as deputies to the bishop, who granted licences and transact other business
Institutions (1908, 1917, 1938 and 1941 - 1963) listing clerks instituted and placed into benefices.

Related information: See also Calendar of Marriage Licences 1877 - 1910 (DS/MC) and Marriage Warrants and Affidavits (Licences) 1905 - 1974 (DS/MP).

Administrative history:
Under Canons 101 to 103 of 1604 marriage licences could only be issued by the ecclesiastical authorities who had jurisdiction over the parish where the marriage was to take place. Licences enabled couples to marry without publication or calling of banns in church.
Usually the licences were handed over to the marrying couple. Sometimes they may be found among the parish records where the marriage took place, but most marriage licences have not survived.

Contents:
This series contains lists of marriage licences recording in brief the licence number, name of the surrogate clerk, date of the licence, the surnames of the bride and groom, and who the licence was given to.
For example entries in DS/MB/001, are set out as follows:

Administrative history:
Under Canons 101 to 103 of 1604 marriage licences could only be issued by the ecclesiastical authorities who had jurisdiction over the parish where the marriage was to take place. Licences enabled couples to marry without publication or calling of banns in church.
Canon Law also required that licences could only be issued 'upon good caution and security taken'. Therefore anyone applying for a licence was required to make a sworn statement called a marriage warrant or affidavit (formerly known as an allegation). The document records the declaration made by one of the parties that there was no known impediment to the marriage and that it met the requirements of the laws of the Church of England. Where either party was a minor, written consent of the parents or guardians was required. The warrants and affidavits normally give the names, parish, approximate age, and marital status of both bride and groom and the occupation of the groom.
Usually the licences were handed over to the marrying couple. Sometimes they may be found among the parish records where the marriage took place, but most marriage licences have not survived.

Contents:
This series contains marriage warrants and affidavits 1905 - 1910 and 1949 - 1974. Each document is on a printed form. The marriage allegation takes the following standard format
'30 December 1905

And he further make oath, that he the said William Martin hath had his usual place of abode with the said parish of Saint Matthew, Upper Tulse Hill for the space of fifteen days last past.
William Martin (original signature)
Sworn before me: C S Nicholl, Surrogate.
(Licence dated: 1 January 1906)'
The affidavits are also on printed forms and include the oath, and also nationality, age, status and whether baptised. Where the couple intending to marry were minors the records include consent forms signed by their parents or guardians.

ORDERS IN COUNCIL  DS/OC  1905 - 1963

2.5 linear feet

Source of acquisition: Deposited by Southwark Diocesan Registry AC/63/50

Arrangement: The orders are arranged in chronological order.

Related information: For later orders see office papers DS/OP

Contents:
This series contains orders in council which detail schemes of commission relating to changes made to diocesan administrative units (such as the union and disunion of benefices, the alteration of parochial boundaries and creation of new parishes) that have been laid before the King or Queen in Council, and ratified by orders which specify when they shall take effect.
Orders in council were created by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in England which was set up by Parliament in 1836 to reorganise dioceses, abolish surplus posts in cathedrals, take over the responsibility for funding bishops and some cathedral costs, and manage the assets that had supported those responsibilities. The surplus income was to be used "for the cure of souls in parishes where such assistance is most required". They had a major role in financing churches for the new population centres that grew up in the Industrial Revolution and in supporting the stipends of the clergy who worked there. In 1856 they took over the work of the Church Building Commissioners. Since 1948 their function has been carried out by the Church Commissioners. When published in the London Gazette the orders have the same force and effect as an Act of Parliament.

Contains visitation returns for whole diocese 1907 - 1951. Visitation books usually contain annotated lists of parishes, parish clergy and churchwardens, arranged by rural deanery.
Visitation is the process by which a bishop oversees his diocese. Diocese Visitations (standardised in canons 109 to 119) are the act of the bishop, who visits persons and places in the diocese with a view of maintaining faith and discipline, and of correcting clerical and lay abuses. It was usual that the bishop held a primary visitation during the first year of office and then repeated as ordinary visitations at intervals of three to four years. The business of visitations and the hearing and judging of accusations was normally conducted not by the bishop in person, but by his official.

Visitation was the process by which the bishop enquired into the state of each parish within his diocese, checking and correcting any perceived abuses or lapses in practice. Churchwardens for each parish were required to answer printed questionnaires which were then submitted prior to the visitation. Used from the late sixteenth century as a means of enforcing the Elizabethan Religious Settlement and of combating perceived lapses in the morals of parishioners, by the twentieth century, subjects of concern related mostly to the general upkeep of the church buildings and churchyard, information about fixtures and fittings, and information relating to insurance and other financial matters. During the Second World War churchwardens were asked to record whether or not their church buildings had suffered any bomb damage.

Prior to a visitation, the churchwardens of each parish in the diocese were called to appear before the bishop's surrogate (deputy) to exhibit their presentments (reports describing the state of the parish including church fabric, churchyard, church fittings, the conduct of clergy, parish officers and parishioners) and the list of churchwardens chosen for the year.

Contents:
This series contains call books for each archdeaconry 1940 - 1956 and a call book for the whole diocese 1924 (previously referenced DS/VB). The books list the parishes by deanery and record the name of the church and names of the churchwardens elected for the year. DS/VB/001 - 003 are indexed by place.
