Administrative history:
The documents in this collection span four generations of the Browne/Murray-Browne family, beginning with Rev Thomas Murray Browne, Archdeacon of Gloucester (d. 1879) and ending with his great-granddaughter, the depositor. The collection also contains papers of the Lloyd-Baker family, reflecting the close link between the two families which began in the early 19th century when Thomas Murray Browne and his brother Col Benjamin Browne married sisters Catherine and Mary Anne Baker. The families became further intertwined in 1900 through the marriage of Wilfred Murray-Browne and Ketha Lloyd-Baker, (parents of the depositor). Also preserved in this collection are a few interesting papers of the Sharp family, predecessors of the Lloyd-Bakers.
The hyphenated surname Murray-Browne was introduced c1874 by Rev Charles Chapman Murray-Brown. Before this, Murray was a christian name in the family, although Rev Thomas Murray Browne was always known by his full name. The hyphenated surname Lloyd-Baker was introduced by Granville Lloyd-Baker, also c1874. Hitherto, Lloyd had been used as a christian name by several members of the family in memory of their Lloyd family ancestors. (A simplified family tree is available from Gloucestershire Record Office.)
