Archival history The records of Chulmleigh parish were deposited in Devon Record Office on 1 November 1990. The parish registers (4678 A/PR 1-22) and some of the Overseers of the poor papers (mainly relating to settlement, removal, apprenticeship and orders for relief - 4768 A/PO 1-22) are the only parts of this large collection which have been listed as at November 2001.

He was born in Atherington and served a 7 year apprenticeship in Chulmleigh with Thomas Darch, miller, he then went to Chittlehampton and agreed with Henry Atkins, esq, to serve him as a miller at Head Mills at 2s 6d a week, after about a year he agreed to rent the mill at a yearly rent of £25, after 6 months he gave up by consent and paid the rent

He was born in Tattishall, Lincolnshire and was apprenticed to learn plumbing with John Boraman, part of the time at Horncastle, he volunteered into the 30th Regiment of Foot and being wounded and disabled gets a pension from Chelsea Hospital

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Bradford and lived there with his parents until he was 12 when he apprenticed to John Nottle of Holsworthy for 7 years to learn clockmaking and gunsmithing, he served for a year after his apprenticeship expired as a journeyman and then went to Mr Smale in Barnstaple for 10 weeks, then to Mr Arnell in Launceston for 6 weeks, he then went to Sheepwash and worked to himself for 6 years as a clock maker and gun smith, then he came to Chulmleigh and has continued to work for himself

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Burrington and apprenticed himself to John Ford, mason, served his time, then he went to Witheridge as a weekly servant with John Packer at 3s, after a year he returned to Burrington and lived with his mother, then he went to Kingsnympton as a weekly servant to William Luxton, mason at 3s 3d, after 2 years he went to Chittlehampton and rented a house for £3 for 3 years, then he went to Chulmleigh and took a small tenement at £6 15s working as a day labourer

Now in Chulmleigh where he was born and apprenticed to Mr Philip Davy until he was 21, then he lived with different people and came to Ashreigney and hired himself to Mr Thomas Mulland at £5 a year for 3 years, he married and rented a house at 25s and worked for Mr Mulland as a weekly servant for 2 years, when he was drawn into the militia, when it was disbanded he went to Chulmleigh and has lived with his father going out as a day labourer

Now in Chulmleigh, aged about 40, he was born there and lived there with his parents until he was 14 when he was apprenticed there to Thomas Drake, when he was 17 he left as his master had no work for him, he agreed with Thomas Hodge for 6d a week for 1½ years, then Humphry Tucker for 6 months by the week, he then went to Newton Bushell with James Potter for 6 months by the week, he then went to Newfoundland for a year and on his return went to Bristol with several people by the week for 2½ years, he then went to work as a labourer on the Turnpike Road between Bridgewater and Wells for a year, then he came to Ashreigny and agreed with for Isaac Greenslade for a year but after 3 months his master turned him away and he then worked as a day labourer for 5 years and got married

Now living in Chulmleigh, she was born in Wantage, Berkshire and lived there until she was 15 when she went to Oxford, All Saints where she lived with John Fry for 2 years as a covenant servant, then went to St Alls and served Charles Stewart for less than a year, returned to Wantage with John Stephens as a covenant servant for 3 months, since she has been a sojorner in Chulmleigh, at Christmas she returned to Wantage with Mr Perkins, victualer and had a female bastard which is now with her in Chulmleigh

He was born in Chulmleigh and apprenticed there, he then hired himself to Isaac Greenslade of Ashreigny for a year and 2 more Mary Webber now living in Chulmleigh, she was born in Chittlehampton and lived there with her father for many years, she then went to Benedict Shapland in Chulmleigh for a year at £2 2s and 2 more years, she is living there at the same wages

He was born in Chulmleigh and apprenticed by his father to William Jewell of Beaford, woolcomber, to learn the trade, after 2¾ years his master failed and with his consent he lived with Martha Bowden in St Giles for 1¼ years, then his master said he could go where he liked so he returned to his father for the rest of his time and has lived in Chulmleigh ever since

Now in Chulmleigh where he was born and lived there with various people until he was 20 when he went to William Passmore in West Worlington for 6 months at 22d a week, he then agreed for a year but left after 6 months, he then went to Mr Davie in Chulmleigh for a year but was dismissed for bad order after 11 months, he is now married

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born there and apprenticed by the parish to Jacob Cobley of East Worlington for an estate in Chulmleigh, he lived with his master in Worlington until he was 20 when he married Mary and rented a house for 9 months, living there with his wife, then they moved to Chulmleigh and they have a daughter Elizabeth aged 1

Now in Chulmleigh where he was born and apprenticed to Humphry Bond, when he was 18 his master was in reduced circumstances and gave him a paper to go where he liked, he went to Ashreigny for a year and then returned to Chulmleigh and served 2½ years with Farmer Cock then he went to Chawleigh with one Cornall for 6 months and then to Lapford to Roger Partridge who died after 8 months, he continued with his widow and left after 3 months

Her husband worked as a servant with John Batt of Burrington for over 2 years, by the year, before he married her

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Knowstone and apprenticed there to John Blackmoor until he was 21, after 6 months his master moved to Meshaw, when he was 20½ his master let him go, on payment of 50s and he finished his time with George Lock of Chulmleigh, then he went to Sandford for 9 months and then came back to George Lock for a year by the week, he did work for some days for other people but gave the extra money to George Lock, he then did another year on the same terms and married

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Chawleigh and lived there with his father until he was 14 when he went into service for several people, when he was 20 he hired himself to John Luxton of Eggesford by the week at 2s, after 13 weeks they agreed for a year at £5 9s after after 9 months they parted and he married in Chawleigh and worked as a labourer

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Yeovilton, Somerset, when he was 15 he apprenticed himself, with his mother's consent, his father was dead, for 7 years to learn the art of woolcombing to Benjamin Elliott of Bruton, after 3½ years his master died and he went to William Wilmot of Ditchett for the rest of his time, there was nothing in writing.

He was born in Dolton and when he was 16 apprenticed himself to Robert Lock of Dolton, woolcomber, for 7 years and has continued in that trade until 3 months ago when he move to Chulmleigh and continues to work in the "watch and clock way"

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Ashreigny where he lived with his parents until he was 13½ when he went to North Molton and lived with a relation for 7½ years, he returned to Chulmleigh and hired himself to John Webber for a year at £5 12s, agreed again for £5 17s, then he went to East Buckland and agreed with William Buckingham for 14 weeks at 2s 9d, he then went to North Molton and lived with his Uncle for 9 months at 2s 6d and then got married

John Down, blacksmith  4678 A/PO 2/30  1783

Now in Chulmleigh where he was born, he lived with his father in Burrington for 13 years and learned his trade from him, when he was 22 he married and went to Chulmleigh and followed his profession for 13 or 14 years, he rented an estate for £13 or £14, then he went to Chawleigh for 2 years renting at £12, then to Winkleigh for 1½ years, then he bought 2 leasehold cottages in Chawleigh for £5 guineas at a rent of 30s which he agreed to pay to William Carter that he might be discharged from rates and taxes

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Buckfastleigh and when he was 10 or 11 his mother apprenticed him to Thomas Wats of Buckfastleigh to learn the art of woolcombing, he served his time and has worked by the piece for several different masters, about 9 years ago he married in Chulmleigh and lives there with his wife and 3 children, 3 or 4 days ago he rented a house for 3 years at £12 per year

John Essery, joiner and cabinet maker  4678 A/PO 2/32  1784

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Little Torrington, when he was 15 or 16 he was apprenticed by his father to Thomas Clement of Bideford, joiner and cabinet maker for 7 years, then he hired himself with Richard Wheeler of Bideford for a year at 4s a week, served 2 years, then he went to Cornwall and Exeter where he worked for Messrs Jones and Stoyle, then he returned to Chulmleigh and hired himself to Benjamin Steele for 9s a week for 6 or 7 years, then 10s a week for a whole year, after 3 months he married

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Chittlehampton and lived there with his parents until he was 8, he then lived with his grandfather for a year and then with several farmers there until he was 14 when he went to Chulmleigh and worked for John Webber for 2 year at £3 a year, then he went to Bishop's Nympton to Mr Sanger for 6 months at 1s a week, then to Romansleigh with William Howard for 3 months at 1s a week and then to John Bray of Rose Ash for 5 weeks and then back to Chulmleigh where he has been relieved

Now in Chulmleigh, he rented an estate there at £105 a year and lived there for 6 months when a warrant was served for rent, he removed to Parwick, Derby and rented, at over £11 for a year, a dwelling house of John Jackson at £2 5s pa, £5 of Henry Cope in Hartington and £4 10s of William Hareling in Ballindon

Now in Chulmleigh where she was born and was removed to Lapford with her parents, when she was 7 she was apprenticed to Richard May in Lapford, after 6 or 7 years he died and she was assigned to Rev. Mr Radford who died 5 weeks later, she was assigned to William Bake, but a year later she ran away because he beat her, she went to James Partridge in Nymet Rowland by the week for 10 months then to Morchard Bishop where she lived in Roger Densham's house and worked for herself for 6 months, then she hired herself to George Grant there for a year, returned to Roger Densham for 6 months, then 6 months by the week for Thomas Tucker, returned to Lapford and lived with her parents working for herself for 9 months, then she came to Chulmleigh and hired herself to John Manning for a year at £2 12s, her master William Baker had not given consent

William Snell, woolcomber  4678 A/PO 2/40  1787

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Ashreigney and lived there with his parents until he was 16, when his father moved to Padstow, 12 months later he and his mother came to Padstow and he worked for his father to learn woolcombing for 5 years, he then hired himself to Francis Ysworth, esq of Totnes for a year at £7, after 4 months he was turned away and enlisted in the Cornish Militia, since it was disbanded he has worked as a woolcomber from place to place, 3½ years ago he married in St James, Taunton and has a son William aged 2½

Now in Chulmleigh where she was born and lived with her parents, when she was 13 she was apprenticed there to Peter Bird, junior, till she was 21, when she was 18 she discharged by an agreement and went to Mr Thomas Herd in Alphington by the week for 3 months, she was then sick and returned to Chulmleigh for 13 weeks, then to William Lawrence in Hatherleigh for 7 weeks, returned to Alphington and Thomas Herd for 8 weeks, the John Boucher in St Thomas at £3 for a year but stayed only 4 months, then for a year with Mrs Langford for £4 4s for 7 months, then she came to Exeter to Mr Cook, sadler, in Fore Street at 5 guineas for a year and stayed 6 weeks and then back to Chulmleigh

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Winkleigh and lived there with his parents till he was 19 when he went to Rosh Ash and served a year with Roger Reed, then he went to Chulmleigh and worked a year for John Maning and then lived in different places till 1766 when he went to Meshaw and rented an estate called Yonderlake at £13 a year plus rates and taxes, after 3 years he returned to Chulmleigh and has worked as a day labourer

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Chawleigh and lived there with his parents who belonged to Chulmleigh, when he was 7 he went to live with James Goss, thatcher, his uncle, he does not know the agreement, when he was 15 or 16 he went to Chulmleigh and lived with his father for 5 or 6 years working as a day labourer and then married

Now in Chudleigh, she was born in Broadhembury and lived there with her parents, when she was 16 she went to live with her uncle in Halberton for 3 years, she then hired herself to Francis Drew, esq of Broadhembury for a year, then she married and went with her husband to Dunsford and lived on their own estate, then they went to Chulmleigh and took a Public House and rented ground from William Courtis for £9 9s and also ground from Peter Bird at £5 for 2 years, her estate in Dunsford is worth £6

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Uplowman and a parish apprentice to Samuel Wreford of Colebrook until he was 24 when he went to Crediton and agreed with Mr George Snelling for a year and served a year and 5 months, then he went to North Tawton as a servant to James Susanna Pattern, esq at £14 a year, served two successive years as a footman and then got married

Now in Chulmleigh, she was born in Dowland and lived there with her father until she was 5 when he moved to Monkokehampton and she lived with him most of the time until 12 weels ago, her father is settled in Monkokehampton as he rented there for £26, she has a female bastard born there

Now in Kingsnympton where he was born and was apprenticed to Thomas Webber there, when he was 17 they parted by consent and he went to Chulmleigh and served Thomas Karslake for 3 months at 18d a week, he had a certificate of liberty from his master, he then served William Broadmead of Chulmleigh, thatcher, by the week for 3 months, then he went to Alexander Parsons by the week for 2 months, then one Labbon at the George, North Street, Exeter at 18d a week for 40 days and then sometime at the Turks Head, then he went to sea in the service of merchants and was in the French Prison for 2 years and then pressed into His Majesty's Ships of War for 7 years during which time his apprenticeship expired, soon after his return from sea he married

Now in Chulmleigh, he was born in Doncaster, Yorks and apprenticed for 7 years to Thomas Gray of Ecclesfield, York, nailmaker, after 5¾ years he left and he returned to Doncaster, Thomas Gray agreed to a discharge on payment to 2 guineas but did not deliver the indenture, he worked for Richard Alored of Doncaster for the rest of his apprenticeship, since then he has worked as a journeyman nailmaker
