Records of London 2012
London 2012 and the Cultural Olympiad
The National Archives is working in partnership with Museums, Libraries and Archives (MLA) to ensure that records created before, during and after the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Cultural Olympiad are well managed, permanently preserved and appropriately shared.
Effective management of these records will:
- Support the effective delivery of the sports and cultural events across the UK
- Mitigate reputational, financial and operational risks
- Guarantee legal and regulatory compliance
- Support openness and transparency for all
- Answer to public accountability and scrutiny post-2012
- Secure a long-term legacy for the benefit of current and future planners, policy makers, researchers, learning and education professionals, and the general public.
This project is called 'The Record', reflecting the sporting, social and cultural significance of London and the United Kingdom hosting the Games and Cultural Olympiad.
Preparing for 2012
The 2012 Olympics, Paralympics and Cultural Olympiad represent a key moment in our cultural history. Through collaboration, The National Archives is helping the many organisations involved to work together to build a comprehensive record for future generations. We are raising awareness and championing effective record-keeping with a wide range of stakeholders from national institutions to small community associations. We are building on our established links with government, archival and cultural organisations and creating new relationships with sporting bodies and broadcasters. We are working towards a federation of linked multimedia archive collections, hosted by many different collaborating partners but accessible through a single, user-friendly online portal. The UK government is committed to creating an inspiring legacy through the Olympic festival: The National Archives is a key organisation, safeguarding the information that will document what has been achieved.
